Mecca was conquered by the Muhammed in January 630 AD (10th day of Ramadan, 8 AH). He made the Ka'aba the most sacred site in all of Islam, on the site where pagan idols were worshiped. Throughout Muhammed's life, and indeed the history of Islam, victory mosques were built on the sites where conquered people had worshiped.
